Set's POV

I sat on the shuttle staring at the moving scenery. I only had 15 more minutes on this one before I had to switch to the train that would take me overnight to school. The shuttle slowed at the station, and a bustle of people hurried on and off. I waited for it to start up again.
“Is this seat taken?” asked a female voice.
“That depends.” I said, not looking up.
Instead of replying with the normal “on what?”  the voice said instead
“Ah. Your response indicates that you don’t want someone sitting next to you. But the tone indicates that at the same time you have a hidden need for human connection, which I feel it is my duty to oblige.”
I heard the owner of the voice take the seat.
Out of curiosity I looked up. It was a girl around my age with bright purple hair and eyes. She was staring intently at me. I stared right back.
“So why the glasses?” she said, completely unperturbed.
I didn’t answer.
“Oh I get it. Some form of emotional trauma, probably rape.”
I jumped.
“NO!”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure? Your enraged response suggests that you are hiding the truth.”
“I wasn’t raped. Why are you talking to me?”
She smiled.
“Because you’re interesting. And we should get to know each other since we’re going to the same school. We ought to stick together, us two.”
I stared at her through my sunglasses.
“How do you know where I’m going to school?” I asked dumbly.
“Since we only just met, I’ll give this one to you. Don’t expect an answer next time though.” She said. I waited for her to continue.
She pointed to my luggage.
“Well, by the amount you’re carrying I can tell you’re going to a boarding school,”
I flinched.
“And by the way you just reacted I can tell you’re like me, and a... special case...  aaand there are only three schools in this general direction for us, and you’re carrying a pillow which means you’ll be staying overnight on the train, which only leaves one school. Skeleton Keys. I’m Zenery, by the way.” She finished off with a smile.
I thought on that for a second.
“So then how did you know before that I was like you?”
Her grin grew wider.
“I told you not to expect an answer next time, didn’t I?”
We sat there in silence for a little while, till a male voice broke in.
“Hey. Git up. Tha’s my seat yer in.”
Zenery turned and looked at the guy, who was on my side. I stared straight forward.
“Hey. I’m talking to you.” He said.
“And he’s not talking back. Isn’t it obvious that he’s sitting there?” Zenery snapped at the man.
“Yeah. And isn’t it obvious that it isn’t your place, bitch?”
“Oh, and it is yours?”
Instead of responding to her, the man spoke to me. I still didn’t look at him.
“Hey, ya gunna let yer girl do all the talkin’ fur ya?”
I kept staring straight forward.
Suddenly I felt hands roughly grab at my shirtfront and drag me up.
“Ya listening to me pretty-boy? I told ya to fucking get up!”
I still didn’t respond. His pock marked face twisted, and he brought his fist up.
“Stop it!” Zenery yelled, standing up, and suddenly I was weightless, and the guy was floating away, a light purple glow surrounding him, barely visible. I looked down at my hand, and saw the same purple outline.
The guy started freaking out.
“What the fuck? Fucking shitting fuck!!!!” Suddenly realization crossed his face.
He looked with fury at Zenery.
“You fucking BITCH! Help! Someone! This girl is abusing her mutation! Officer!” he turned calling to the man by the door.
Zenery’s face filled with horror, and she dropped her arms. I fell to the floor and heard the other guy do the same. The officer rushed over, and before anyone could react, hit Zenery across the face. She flew back and hit the chairs on the other side. The officer pulled out his gun and aimed it at her.
“Hey! Leave her be. She didn’t mean it.” I said, before I could stop myself.
Instantly the man’s weapon was turned on me.
“And you, kid? Are you marked too?” he said.
I almost laughed at the man’s poorly concealed fear. Must be new on the job.
“Yeah. What of it?” I said calmly, regaining my composure, and putting up my hands.
The man considerably whitened.
“Show me y-your m-mark then.”
It was very hard to not laugh.
I slowly grabbed the rim of my shirt, and pulled it up just far enough to show the man what he wanted.
He turned whiter than before.
Thankfully at that point the shuttle stopped off at our stop.
“Sir?” Zenery began.
The gun was back on her.
“This is our stop sir. I am so sorry for earlier. I was out of control. But it shouldn’t ever happen again. We’re on our way to a boarding school right now for just that reason.” She finished, unperturbed.
The man looked far too relieved at this turn of events.
He lowered his gun, and signaled that we get out which we did.
As we left Zenery gave me a look saying she meant nothing of what she had said to the cop. Sly bitch.
Zenery and I proceeded to board the train, and that ride was thankfully much more peaceful than the first.
