It was very, very difficult to pay attention to Professor Elena, due to the presence of a certain redhead. I was, naturally, studiously avoiding looking anywhere except my paper. Not looking... Not looking... Good heavens, why, Xerin? Why did you have to realize you liked him? Why do you have to be such a goose? I was even fidgeting, and I never, ever fidgeted! The temptation to shake Briar and ask him why he was such a contrary idiot was overwhelming. But I controlled myself by chewing one of my nails. I actually chewed my nail. This had got to stop. I was clearly out of my mind, and the best thing to do would be to ship me off to an insane asylum forthwith.
If only.
In my hurry to leave the classroom, I swept all my books into a pile and started walking quickly towards the door. And, apparently, straight into Briar.
"Are you all right?" He raised an eyebrow quizzically. I'm certain I immediately approximated the color of a beet.
"No, I mean yes, I'm definitely okay, except for walking into you obviously, for which I'm sorry..." I fled.
I stopped in the corridor outside of my room and started pacing, completely unsure of what I was going to do.
"What are you doing?" Oh my god. Why was he here? I looked up, only to freeze in horror. This wasn't the door to my room! I slowly pivoted to face Briar.
"Um..." It was then that I noticed his eyes were twinkling. Why, that... he was laughing at me! I felt the last frayed strands of my patience snap. Furious, I growled, "I can't help it if you're too stupid to figure it out!", scowled at him, and stalked away.
Why, why, why?!
