Interesting. Very interesting. I had just met my roommates. There was one very happy Korean girl named Amber who was a Light Elementalist, and one fascinating blond girl named Larimar who was an Air Elementalist. Apparently Larimar had no recollection of her early years, and Amber came from a family of Elementalists in Korea. Sadly, I hadn’t gotten enough time with them to discern any more interesting facts. Once Amber had arrived we’d only had 10 minutes to get to the dining hall. I had arrived second, after Larimar who had apparently been there since the afternoon.
Anyways, we had to rush to the dining hall to get there in time, and were just sliding into our seats when the lights in the room began to dim. One of the two women in the center of the staff table stood up. Both were garbed in strange attire. One, the seated one, had long, dark, almost curly hair set off by a sinister diadem and was wearing an floor-length black dress, made of something resembling velvet, with wide, flowing sleeves made out of rose patterned lace. The other, the standing one, had blonde, slightly wavy hair cut in numerous fine layers and was also wearing a sweeping, elegant velvet gown, but hers was sleeveless, and was accompanied by long, spider-web lace gloves. Each one had a silver key topped with a skull hanging from the front of their dress.
I didn’t know much about them, but had heard enough of the hushed whispers in the halls to know that they were the headmasters. They were well known for their uncanny ability to know everything and show up behind people with no warning.
They were Azami and Milaek, the enigmatic duo of the school.
The blonde- Milaek- began speaking first.
“Hello students. Welcome to Skeleton Keys. We hope your endeavors in finding your dorms were successful? Though of course, for all first years we know it was not. Speaking of which, two are about to show up who had difficulty finding the dining hall. I would tell you to pay them no mind, but I know you won’t listen to me, so let’s wait for them so that our speech can go uninterrupted.”
As soon as she finished speaking the doors at the back of the room burst open.
“See? I TOLD you it was the hearth pattern!” A female voice rang out, annoyance clear.
Along with the rest of the students, I turned my head to stare at the two latecomers. One had bouncy brown ringlets and was the source of the female voice. The other was a flame headed male, who at present was glaring at Curly.
They both suddenly seemed to notice the thousands of eyes on them.
“Oh, hello. Boy and girl, hmmm?” Milaek asked slyly from the front of the room as the two rushed to find seats, unsuccessfully.
“And what do you think they were doing, Milaek dear? Not sleeping together already, I hope?” Azami said calmly, and I could have sworn her seemingly black eyes flashed red. Curly stuttered something unintelligible, turning cherry red, and Hothead stood there with his mouth hanging open. Milaek just raised an eyebrow and smiled eerily, showing her strangely pointed teeth.
“Well, Briar and Xerin aren’t on particularly good terms, yet, so I think we can cross off sex.” Her gaze didn’t waver, even though a few chuckles rang out in the hall. “Why don’t we have them sit there, next to Zenery?”
I jumped at the mention of my name, and was about to tell them that there were no more seats, but when I looked next to me I saw there were two empty chairs that I could have sworn weren’t there before. The headmasters’ reputation certainly wasn’t exaggerated.
Curly and Hothead, or rather Xerin and Briar, rushed over to the seats and sat down faster than I had thought possible. They were both, by this point, bright red.
Milaek yawned audibly.
“Moving on, we would like to welcome you to Skeleton Keys Academy. Here you will learn not only how to control your powers-”
At this point Azami picked up seamlessly.
“But how to use them.”
With that the lights exploded back to life, and the smell of food suddenly wafted from the tables. The first-years all looked startled.
“You thought your powers were only for combat?” She and Milaek smirked in unison. “You were wrong.” Milaek seated herself.
“Enjoy your meal.”
